Zimbabwe’s close relations with India have seen the Indian embassy collaborating with locals for a free medical outreach programme in Bulawayo.
Two thousand people have so far benefited from the week long free mobile clinic, which is meant to improve access to health care services.
In an interview with journalists during the outreach programme in Bulawayo South this week, Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Vijay Khanduja said the mobile clinic is testimony to the strong relations between Zimbabwe and India.
“The mobile clinic is an initiative from government to government and we are here to offer people with free medicine. Zimbabwe and India share strong ties and we are also open to providing these facilities in any area in Zimbabwe,” said the Ambassador.
Beneficiaries of the programme praised the benevolent gesture.
“We are grateful of this gesture. Some of us are now old and cannot afford medicine, but having to get them for free is such a blessing. Getting an optician to consult you is expensive and getting the spectacles is a hustle. l am grateful to be consulted and get spectacles for free at my door step,” said some community members.
The medical outreach programme which ends this week has roped in an optician from Denmark, who attended to more than 1000 people.
